Environmental Therapeutics

Environmental therapeutics is a growing set of effective treatments that use natural phenomena, such as light, and air. Difficulties that tend to respond well to these therapies include:

  • Depression
  • Mania
  • Troubles with sleep
  • Reactions to shift work
  • Changes to Daylight Saving Time

For example, a recent multi-site study by psychiatrist Ray Lam and colleagues found that light therapy was far more effective than Prozac (fluoxetine) for major depression.

Many other disorders, such as Parkinson’s Disease, and fibromyalgia, also appear to involve circadian rhythms, and can be improved with environmental therapies, such as light therapy.
